What is an osteopathic emergency?

We speak of an osteopathic emergency when pain appears quickly (within a few hours or a few days) and severely limits movements:
  • Blocked back or neck
  • Difficulty walking
  • Pain that prevents sleeping or working normally.
These are so-called mechanical pains, related to muscles, joints, nerve tension or posture. The objective of care is to reduce pain, recover mobility and give you a clear plan for the hours and days that follow.
*Osteopathy does not replace medical emergency services. In case of doubt (significant trauma, fever, loss of sensation, chest pain with shortness of breath, etc.), it is essential to consult a doctor or call emergency services before making any appointment.

Most frequent emergency reasons

Our osteopaths regularly treat mechanical emergencies such as:
  • Acute torticollis / blocked neck
  • Acute lumbago / lumbar sprain
  • Sciatica crisis, neuralgia (cervicobrachial, gluteal, intercostal...)
  • Joint blockages (spine, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle...)
  • Rib blockage, non-cardiac chest pain
  • Interscapular pain (between shoulder blades)
  • Mechanical origin migraines / cervicogenic headaches
  • Recent sports injuries and overloads
If the pain appeared suddenly and you have difficulty moving normally, you are probably in an osteopathic emergency context.

Care Adapted to Each Need

Our osteopaths work with a diverse clientele — adults, pregnant women, athletes, workers or elderly people — to treat a wide range of disorders:
  • Musculoskeletal pain (neck, lumbar, joint)
  • Nervous disorders (sciatica, neuralgia)
  • Sports injuries
  • Pain related to stress or bruxism
  • Women's health follow-up (pregnancy, postpartum, hormonal cycles)

How does an emergency session work at OSTEO DIRECT?

Each consultation follows a structured clinical methodology, identical for all osteopaths at the clinic.
1. Targeted interview
Precise analysis of context: pain onset, triggering movements, medical history, ongoing treatments, associated signs (tingling, loss of strength, etc.).
2. Clinical evaluation and red flag screening
Mobility tests, palpation, specific examinations to differentiate mechanical pain from a situation requiring medical advice.
If doubt remains about treatment safety, we direct you to the appropriate service (doctor, imaging, emergency).
3. Adapted osteopathic treatment (≈ 50 minutes)
Tissue, muscular, articular and myofascial manual techniques, chosen according to your condition, age and medical history.
The objective is to reduce pain, release restricted areas and restore more functional movement. For some very acute situations (severe lumbago, significant sciatica), one session is not always enough: the first consultation already aims to make you more functional and plan the follow-up.
4. Immediate plan and recurrence prevention
Rest positions, guidelines for the 24–48 hours following the session, simple adaptations (work, sleep, activities), basic exercises and, if necessary, follow-up proposal.

Emergency at clinic or at home

You can choose between:

01

415 Boulevard Saint-Joseph Est, 2 minutes walking from Laurier metro (orange line).
Ideal if you can travel and want an optimized consultation environment.
02
For patients for whom travel is difficult (very intense pain, reduced mobility, young parents, seniors, etc.).
The osteopath brings their table and all necessary equipment to reproduce care as structured as at the clinic.
*The rates are transparent: the total amount (taxes included) is confirmed before the trip.

When to consult a doctor or go to emergency instead?

Osteopathy should not be the first step in the following situations:
  • Pain after significant fall or accident (road, sports, work)
  • Loss of consciousness, confusion, speech or vision disorder
  • Chest pain with pressure, shortness of breath, radiation to arm or jaw
  • High fever associated with significant pain or neck stiffness
  • Sudden loss of strength, difficulty moving a limb, walking disorders
  • Difficulty controlling bladder or bowels, numbness in perineal region
In these cases, it is essential to consult a doctor as a priority or go to the emergency room.
