Muscle knots

Muscle knots, also known as myofascial trigger points, are localized areas of tension and contraction within muscles, often causing pain and discomfort. These knots result from muscle fibers remaining contracted even at rest, creating a small, rigid region within the muscle. Their formation can be attributed to a variety of factors, such as physical or emotional stress, poor posture, repetitive movements or trauma.

Touching a muscle knot can reveal a bumpy or ropy sensation under the skin, often painful on contact. The pain associated with these trigger points may be local, or it may spread to other areas of the body, a phenomenon known as referred pain. For example, a knot in the trapezius muscle can induce headaches or pain in the neck and shoulders.

Treatment of muscular knots includes a variety of techniques, such as massage, stretching, heat or cold application, as well as strengthening and relaxation exercises. Manual therapies such as osteopathy often prove highly effective in reducing tension and restoring normal muscle function. In addition, tools such as massage balls or foam rollers can be used at home to target and release these trigger points.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle, maintaining correct posture and regular physical activity are all effective strategies for preventing the formation of muscle knots. By proactively caring for your muscles, you can not only avoid these inconveniences, but also promote optimal muscle health and overall well-being.
